For an in-depth review of this model see LG 55LH90 review
47LH90 is the best LCD TV that LG has ever produced and the first that uses LED backlighting with local dimming. This technology allows this model to achieve deep blacks and great overall picture quality. If you are thinking of buying this LCD TV then you should be sure that this is the size for you. One problem with this HDTV is that it suffers from poor off-angle so if you want to get the most out of it then pay attention to the LCD TV screen size optimal viewing distance guide. If you stay in the sweet spot the LH90 looks great and you won’t have to worry about poor off-angle performance. For this model the Optimal Distance for SDTV (Standard definition) is 16.3 ft and for HDTV (High definition) is 6.1 ft.
Design
With a sophisticated and eye-catching design this LCD TV has lots of visual features. If Samsung has TOC (touch of color) and Toshiba has Deep Lagoon Design, LG has a semitransparent tint of blue surrounding the edges. This model is very slim with less then one inch thickness, even thinner the LED based models from Samsung. This is possible thanks to LED backlighting with local dimming technology. A glossy black frame surrounds the matte screen that performs great in bright light conditions. The remote control didn’t change to much from last year except for backlight buttons and more spacing between keys. The menu comes equipped with an onscreen manual for basic information.
New features from LG
LED backlighting with local dimming it was first used by Samsung on A950 series and Sony on Sony XBR8 series. This technology used also on Toshiba’s 2009 high-end model –SV670U series -, gives this LCD TV a high contrast ratio of 2.000.000:1.The local dimming allows LCD TVs to darken – even switch off – groups of LEDs in some areas of the screen. Another feature that is available on this model is the 240Hz refresh rate. This technology isn’t “the real 240Hz” that is found on LCD TVs from Samsung and Sony. While this two brands quadruple standard 60 frames content to obtain 240Hz, LG, Toshiba and Vizio doubles 60 frames content, like a normal 120Hz LCD TV, while flashing the backlight very fast to obtain a 240Hz effect. Toshiba is the only manufacturer that named the technology “240Hz effect”; while LG and Vizio didn’t bother to tell us there is a difference. This model lacks internet interactive features and the possibility to separate dejudder from antiblur. Intelligent sensor is a feature that allows the LCD TV to automatically set picture parameters according to ambient light in the room. 47LH90 offers good connectivity with four HDMI inputs, two component-video inputs, two AV input with composite video, one RF input, optical digital audio output but it lacks an S-video input.
Best performing LCD TV from LG
This top rated LCD TV from LG delivers good overall performance. The black levels are amazing, not as good as the ones on best plasmas, but better then most LCD TVs available on the market. It delivers accurate color thanks to extensive picture adjustments and, in this section, is almost as good as best plasmas TVs or on Sony XBR8 series series. If you like to watch a movie with the lights on, this model is a good choice because it has a matte screen that reflects light less intensely then other glossy LCD TV panels. For PC usage LG 47LH90 offers 2 options: via HDMI and via analog PC input. In both cases the outcome is great.
Conclusion
47LH90 is the best rated model from LG, it doesn’t beat best plasmas or best LCD TVs, but is an elite member of the HDTV club.
