This high-end LED LCD TV delivers 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, FULL HD 1080p resolution and an ultra-fast 2.4ms response time. Up for review is the new LG 42LH90 from LG’s 2009 LCD TV line up. This HDTV is the high-end model from LG and wants to compete with other high-end models from Samsung, Sony or Toshiba. One thing you should decide before purchasing an LCD TV is what size you need. If you are one of those people who think that bigger is better then you are wrong. Choosing the size of you future LCD TV screen is very important because you want to get the most out of it. So, if you want to buy a 42 inch model then you should have a look at the LCD TV screen size optimal viewing distance guide. You will find a small chart there that will tell you what is the optimal viewing distance for most of the sizes available on the market. For this particular model you need to stay at an optimal distance of 14.6 ft for SDTV (Standard definition) and 5.5 ft for HDTV (High definition).

Eye-catching design

With manufactures like Samsung and Toshiba that added in their 2009 line-up important design features, LGs semitransparent blue tint framing was a must. One thing that makes this model better looking compared to other competitors on the market is his thickness. With less then 1 inch thickness this LCD TV is one of the best looking available. This HDTV is so thin thanks to LED backlighting with local dimming technology that has been implemented on this 2009 model from LG. We are used with this technology because it was first used by Samsung and Sony on their top series like A950 and XBR8.Another thing that we like about this model is the matte screen that is less reflective performing in bright light. The remote control and the menu are almost the same as last year.

LG 42LH90 features

Without a doubt, the biggest improvement made by LG with this model is LED backlighting with local dimming technology which makes this LCD TV almost as good as best plasmas available on the market. As we said before, this feature was first used by other manufactures and since then, all the major players on the HDTV market implemented this technology on there high-end models. We have from last year Samsung A950, Sony XBR8 and from 2009 we have Toshiba SV670U and of course LG LH90 series. LG 42LH90 delivers a refresh rate of 240Hz which is the best available on the market. Is actually a “240Hz effect” that is also used by Toshiba and Vizio. 240Hz effect is different from true 240Hz refresh rate because the first one doubles 60 frames to achieve a refresh rate of 120Hz while flashing the backlight very fast to obtain a 240Hz effect. The second one quadruple original 60 frames to obtain the true 240Hz refresh rate used by Samsung and Sony. Both technologies have the almost the same outcome, the second one being slightly better. Beside is LED backlighting with local dimming technology and the 240Hz effect refresh rate another nice feature is Intelligent Sensor that auto calibrates the LCD TV according to light conditions in the room. We don’t like that you can’t separate dejudder from anti-blur and that it lacks internet interactive features.

The best ever LCD TV from LG

42LH90 is without a doubt the best HDTV that we ever reviewed from LG. This model delivers superb image quality, excellent black-level performance and shadow detail. Is not as good as best plasmas or other LCD TVs that use LED backlighting with local dimming like the XBR8 series or Samsung A950, but better then most of LCD TVs with normal backlight technology available on the market. One section were this model is excellent is color accuracy. In this area outperforms best LCD TVs from top brands like Samsung, Toshiba or Sony and the difference between this LCD TV and best plasmas is quite subtle even side by side.
